How To Store A Smoothie

Smoothies can be a quick way to get a quick burst of nourishment. Running out of time to prepare your smoothie in the morning? Here’s a quick method to prepare more than one ahead while keeping the nutrition fresh.

While they’re simple to make, there’s not always time to assemble and clean up after making one on the fly. Happily, I’ve discovered how to make them ahead for busy days.

1. Select the freshest ingredients you can find

Buy fresh, organic, in-season fruit in bulk, lay out on cookie sheets and put in the freezer. Once frozen, transfer fruit to air tight containers and put back into the freezer. If it’s not in season, buy large bags of your favourite fruit for freezing. I do this weekly and include things like berries, sliced up pineapple, bananas, and avocado, which freeze really well.

2. Freeze fresh-pressed or not-from-concentrate juice in ice cube trays

I call these ‘juice-cubes.’ They’ll come in handy later.

3. Assemble and blend your smoothie

Pour the mixture into glass mason jars right to the top. Squirt some lemon juice into each jar to help preserve the nutritional value. If your smoothie doesn’t fill to the very top, add a few juice-cubes to bring the liquid level to the top and seal with a lid. It’s important to do this so the jars are air-tight when sealed to prevent oxidation.

This saves so much time in the morning when everyone’s clamouring to get ready and start the day. You can feel good knowing that you’ve given your family (and yourself) a highly nutritious start to the day.

I tend to put kale into our smoothies every day, and my frozen kale-berry smoothie is one of our fav’s. Give it a try and get creative. There are SO many amazing combinations for you to make a delicious meal in a jar.
