Growth Feels Like Avoidance Until You Name It

Avoidance right before a season of expansion is a nervous system response, not a character flaw. It shows up when the plan is already clear, the list is already written, and the next task is easy enough to do today, yet somehow the day fills up with everything except that task.

I’ve watched this pattern in clients for years, and I’m in the middle of it myself right now as a new piece of my work takes shape. The list is sitting right there. I know exactly what to do. And I’ve caught myself reorganizing my son’s college prep, planning his last summer before he leaves, and filling business hours with tasks that could easily happen after five, all while the one document that matters sits untouched. None of those things are wrong to care about. They’re just not what’s actually happening underneath.

What’s actually happening is a freeze response wearing the costume of a to-do list. Growth reveals what you’re ready to outgrow, and some part of your nervous system remembers a time when growing that fast, that publicly, or that boldly didn’t feel safe. In this episode, I walk through the two minute practice I use to move through it, rooted in Stephen Porges’ polyvagal theory and the role of vagal tone in feeling safe in your body again, and I connect it to the Returns work in my Four Returns framework, specifically what this pattern costs you on the Identity and Relational side when it shows up outside of business too.

In This Episode:

  • The exact shape avoidance takes when you’re in a season of expansion, and why it looks like busyness instead of resistance
  • A real, current example from my own life with my son heading to college this fall
  • Why this is a freeze response in disguise, not a lack of discipline or drive
  • The nervous system science behind why growth can trigger an old sense of unsafety
  • A two minute practice for moving through it, built on vagal toning and a grounding statement
  • Where this same pattern might be showing up outside your business, in relationships, health, or intimacy
  • One question to carry with you this week
