How to Know When It's Time to Step Back From a Role You've Outgrown
There can be a kind of guilt that shows up when you’re ready to step back from something you love, before you’ve done anything wrong at all. I felt it years ago while I was deeply involved in a number of committees and volunteer roles, right around the time my business needed more of my energy than I had room to give it. This episode is the story of that season, told through the lens of my Seasons Success Method, the framework I use to help founders recognize when a role, a season, or a version of themselves has run its course.
I walk through the internal negotiation I had with myself before I stepped back. The wider lens that helped me reframe the decision, the way people change careers and cities and majors without asking permission first. And the part I’ve never told publicly, how I found the people to step into the roles I was leaving, and what I learned about the gap between capability and confidence in the process.
That story turned into a pattern I still use today. I can spot the early signs of a season change now, both in myself and in the people I work alongside, largely because of what that transition taught me. This episode isn’t a how-to. It’s a story meant to get you thinking about what you’re holding onto simply because you’ve always held it, and what you might be waiting for permission to step into.
When you apply this through the lens of the Seasons Success Method, the takeaway is simple. Protecting the space between the scheduled hours of your business is where the real movement happens. Clarity, new ideas, and shifts in direction rarely show up on command. They show up in the room you make for them.
Listen for the story about the volunteers who thought they weren’t equipped, the reframe that made my own exit feel less impossible, and the question I want you to sit with by the end.
In This Episode:
- Why the version of you that built something isn’t always the version meant to keep running it
- The reframe that made stepping back from a role I loved feel possible instead of impossible
- What I learned finding the people to step into the roles I was leaving
- Why capable people often wait for permission they never needed
- How that season taught me to spot my own pattern of season changes in business
- Why the space between your scheduled hours might be where your best decisions actually come from
- A question worth sitting with if you’re holding onto something out of habit instead of alignment
